ENDANGERING THE ARCADE

Writer: Joseph CamarotaJoseph Camarota

Auto percentaging, or automatic adjustment of payout percentages in arcade and amusement machines, has been a controversial practice in the industry. While it may seem like a quick way to maintain competitiveness and profitability, it can have several negative impacts on both operators and customers in the long run:

1. Decreased Customer Trust

When players notice that the odds of winning are constantly being adjusted without transparency, it can lead to frustration and a loss of trust in the fairness of the games. Trust is crucial in the entertainment industry, and any perception of unfairness can drive customers away, affecting repeat business.

2. Lowered Customer Experience

Amusement and arcade games are meant to be fun, exciting, and rewarding. If auto percentaging is used to manipulate the payouts, customers may feel that their chances of winning are artificially limited. This leads to a negative experience, as players may feel they are being tricked or manipulated, which can reduce overall satisfaction and diminish the enjoyment factor.

3. Reduced Revenue in the Long Run

While auto percentaging can provide short-term profit gains by lowering payouts, it can result in fewer repeat players and a reduction in overall engagement. Customers are more likely to visit arcades or amusement venues that offer fair and transparent odds, meaning operators who use auto percentaging may experience declining foot traffic and lower long-term revenue.

4. Increased Regulation and Scrutiny

As players become more aware of auto percentaging, there may be calls for stricter regulations and more oversight on payout systems. This increased scrutiny can lead to higher operational costs for operators, as they will need to ensure that their machines comply with more stringent guidelines or face penalties.

5. Impact on Brand Reputation

Amusement operators who use auto percentaging may be perceived as more interested in maximizing profit at the expense of customer experience. This can harm a brand’s reputation, especially in an industry where word-of-mouth and customer loyalty are essential for growth. Negative reviews and bad publicity could result in a loss of credibility and reduced appeal.

6. Potential for Player Burnout

Players who continuously see their chances of winning diminished may experience burnout. As frustration grows from perceived unfairness, players may become disengaged, ultimately leading to reduced participation and fewer game plays. This, in turn, harms the profitability of operators relying on repeat customers.

7. Legal Ramifications

  • Some states and countries have laws requiring arcade and redemption games to be fair and not deceptive. If auto-percentaging is hidden from players and significantly alters gameplay unpredictably, it could be considered misleading.

  • Transparency is key—some jurisdictions require clear disclosures if payout odds change dynamically.

  • Many jurisdictions have strict regulations distinguishing games of skill from games of chance. If auto-percentaging significantly influences the outcome of a game, it may push the classification toward gambling, which is heavily regulated.

  • Redemption games must typically ensure that skill—not luck or automated adjustments—primarily determines the outcome.
